Open yellow box woodland on the western half of the block, Moppity Road, Young

Stay on a yellow box hill, five minutes out of Young.

A three-bedroom cottage on a long block off Moppity Road — the whole place to yourself, a deck facing north-east over the paddock, and half the farm left as the box woodland it has always been. Sheep are going in behind the fence.

The stay

Three bedrooms on a working hill, five minutes from Young.

A separate cottage on the high corner of the block, yours for the whole stay — not a room in someone else's house. Three bedrooms, one bathroom, and an open living room that runs straight out onto the deck.

Not taking bookings yet — we are still getting it ready. Check back, or email and we will tell you when it opens.

A queen in the main room, two singles in the second and one in the third, so it sleeps five without anyone drawing straws. Split-system heating and cooling, a smart TV, and Starlink internet that holds up well enough to work a day from the kitchen bench if you have to.

The whole place faces north-east across the paddock, so the sun arrives in the kitchen and leaves from the far end of the deck. Rainwater from a single tank. There is a big shed too, so bikes, boards, a kayak or whatever the weekend is actually about all have somewhere to go.

The short version

What you get.

Sleeps

Five

One queen, three singles, across three bedrooms. One bathroom with a walk-in shower.

The whole cottage

Yours

Nobody else on the place while you are in it. Park at the door.

Kitchen

A real one

Gas cooktop, oven, full-size fridge, and an island bench to stand around.

Internet

Starlink

Satellite, so it does not care how far down the road you are. Good enough to work a day on, or stream something at night.

Heating & cooling

Split system

It gets to forty in February and below zero in July. The room handles both.

Getting here

Sealed road

Five minutes from the main street of Young. No four-wheel-drive required.

The land

A long block, running west into the trees.

The house, tank and sheds sit on the high eastern end near the road. From there the block runs a long way west — mown paddock first, then a gate, then box woodland with kangaroos in it most evenings.

Yellow box is where the name comes from. Eucalyptus melliodora — flaky honey-coloured bark low down, smooth pale limbs above, and a heavy nectar flow that fills the tree with bees when it flowers. It's the country this district grew before anyone put a fence across it, and the western half of the block is still woodland.

Box-gum woodland is also a listed endangered community in this part of NSW, so the western half stays as it is.

Next

Sheep behind the fence, and a dam at the bottom.

A small mob of sheep is going on the open country between the trees. It is grass management that does not involve a tractor and a slasher every three weeks, and it is a great deal better to look at from the deck.

The low end of the block is where water wants to sit, so a dam goes in down there eventually.

Getting here

Two hours from Canberra, four from Sydney.

Moppity Road runs south-west out of Young through orchard and vine country. You'll pass more cherry trees than cars.

Everything below is a drive time from the front gate, give or take the state of the Olympic Highway.

November & December

You have landed in the cherry capital.

Young grows more cherries than anywhere else in the country, and for about eight weeks a year the whole district runs on them. Roadside stalls, orchard gates open, and a town that throws a festival about it.

We do not grow them here — not yet — but you are five minutes from people who have for generations, and the fruit does not travel better than this.

The season

Nov – Dec

Roughly the start of November to the end of December, and the weather moves it every year. Rain at the wrong moment splits the fruit and shortens it.

Picking your own

Ring ahead

Around seventeen orchards sell at the gate, but only some let you pick — the rest are shed sales. The Hilltops list ↗ is the one to check, and entry fees vary.

The festival

First weekend of Dec

The National Cherry Festival ↗ — street parade, markets, fireworks and a seed-spitting contest. Every bed in the district goes early.

Worth the drive

Day trips, none of them over three hours.

The Hilltops sits in the middle of a lot of country worth seeing. These are the ones we'd send you to, closest first.

On the water

Somewhere to swim and something to catch.

There is no beach within four hours, but there is a great deal of fresh water. Two big storages sit inside an easy drive, and a swimming hole ten minutes up the road.

Check the WaterNSW site before you go — recreation areas at their dams close on total fire ban days.

What's on

The Hilltops books out early.

Three big festivals anchor the year — the Woolfest at Boorowa in October, the Kite Festival at Harden the weekend after, and the National Cherry Festival in Young on the first weekend of December.

Everything in between is shows, markets, picnic races and open gardens. Cherry Festival weekend is the one to book months ahead.

Dates taken from the Hilltops Region visitor calendar and correct as at August 2026. Each one links out to its own listing — confirm with visithilltopsregion.com.au before planning a trip around one.
